British game development studio The Chinese Room, known for atmospheric narrative-driven titles like *Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture* and the upcoming *Still Wakes the Deep*, has regained its independence. The studio was previously acquired by Sumo Digital in 2018 but has now split from its parent company to operate as an independent entity once again.
Founded in 2007 by Dan Pinchbeck and Jessica Curry, The Chinese Room gained acclaim for its unique storytelling in games such as *Dear Esther*. Under Sumo Digital’s ownership, the studio continued developing new projects while maintaining its creative identity. The decision to regain independence comes as the studio prepares for the release of *Still Wakes the Deep*, a horror game set on a deteriorating oil rig in the North Sea.
In a statement, studio director Ed Daly emphasized the importance of creative autonomy, saying the move allows the team to focus on their distinctive vision without corporate constraints. Industry analysts suggest this shift reflects a growing trend of mid-sized studios seeking independence to preserve their artistic direction.
The Chinese Room’s departure from Sumo Digital follows similar moves in the gaming industry, where developers increasingly prioritize flexibility over corporate backing. Fans of the studio can expect *Still Wakes the Deep* to launch later this year, with the team now fully in control of its future projects.
