Reddit users regained access to the platform on Thursday after a brief but widespread outage that left many unable to browse or post for nearly an hour. The disruption, which began around 4:15 PM ET, affected both the website and mobile app, displaying error messages for users attempting to load content. By 5:00 PM ET, the company confirmed service restoration via its status page, attributing the issue to an internal technical glitch without providing further specifics. DownDetector, an outage monitoring service, reported a spike in user complaints during the incident, with issues concentrated in North America and Europe. This marks Reddit’s second notable outage this year, following a similar incident in March that lasted approximately 90 minutes. Analysts suggest the platform’s growing reliance on cloud infrastructure and third-party APIs may contribute to these intermittent failures, though Reddit has yet to release a detailed post-mortem. The outage occurred amid heightened scrutiny of the social media giant, which recently faced backlash over API pricing changes affecting third-party developers.
